Update at 7:15 p.m.: The shelter is now open at the Mountain Ranch Resource Center at 7867 Whiskey Slide Road in Mountain Ranch. American Red Cross spokesperson Lilly Wyatt reports that they will asses the need on Wednesday morning and decide how long to keep the shelter open.

Original Post at 6:38 p.m.: Mountain Ranch, CA — American Red Cross officials report a shelter will open in Mountain Ranch tonight for those needing to get out of the cold wintry weather.

There is no location or time of opening in place as of yet, according to Red Cross spokesperson Lilly Wyatt, who says volunteers are being assembled. Wyatt says, “The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department did contact us and requested that a shelter be opened for all those people who are still camping on their properties due to the Butte Fire. The weather is going to be really cold overnight so we just want to make sure there is a place for them to go to tonight.”

As previously reported, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which remains in effect until noon on Wednesday. The areas include both the Mother Lode above 2,500 feet and the entire Sierra Nevada with snow that could fall to as low as 1,500 feet late tonight or early Wednesday morning.

As soon as the time and location are determined, we will update this story with those details.
