More Snow This Sunday

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra Nevada from late Saturday night through late Sunday night.

This system will bring periods of heavy rain and mountain snow as well as strong gusty winds. The heaviest rainfall will occur on Sunday.

Snow levels with this system are expected to be a little lower than the previous system, so a larger area is likely to be impacted.

Total snow accumulations by Monday morning are expected to reach fifteen inches at the 5000 foot level and up to two Feet at the highest elevations.

Total rainfall amounts from Saturday night through early Monday are expected to total between one third and one inch in the Central Valley and one to two inches in the Mother Lode.

Wind gusts of thirty to forty mph are expected in the Central Valley with gusts up ranging from forty-five mph to fifty mph over the higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada. Downed tree limbs and difficult driving conditions will be possible.

If traveling in the Sierra Nevada, be prepared for winter weather conditions. Carry tire chains and other emergency supplies and expect travel delays. Poor visibility will make freeway speeds very hazardous. Strong winds may make driving difficult.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow and strong wind that may impact travel.
