Update: Heat Dome Will End This Week
The prolonged period of dangerously hot conditions, with record and near record temperatures, ends tonight (Friday).
The Excessive Heat Warning, issued for the entire region, will expire at 8 PM this evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the high temperatures in the Mother Lode, the Northern San Joaquin Valley and the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada could reach up to 110 degrees in certain places today.
The highs in Mariposa County, the Yosemite National Park Valley floor and the central San Joaquin Valley will range between 105 to 110 degrees. The highs in the lower central Sierra Nevada will range between 100 to 108 degrees.
The extreme heat significantly increases the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
