Darrell Raymond Scofield, born August 25, 1930 in Big Oak Flat, California passed away Friday, March 3, 2023 at his residence in Big Oak Flat, California.  Darrell Raymond Scofield, one of Big Oak Flat’s oldest-living residents, passed away peacefully, at his childhood home on March 3, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born on Aug. 23, 1930, and raised in Big Oak Flat.

Darrell’s parents were Ray and Martha Scofield. Martha taught school in Big Oak Flat and Groveland. Ray Scofield was a county road foreman, where Darrell also worked as a teenager. He attended grade school in Big Oak Flat and high school in Sonora. He married his wife, Betty McLellan, at Big Creek Ranch, which today is known as Pine Mountain Lake in Groveland, California. He was married for 66 years until Betty’s passing in 2016. He served proudly in the United States Army, spending time in Korea and Japan in the 3rd Platoon Clearing Company, 24th Division. Most of his life was spent working for the California Department of Fish and Game and California Division of Highways/CalTrans as a heavy equipment operator. He had been retired since 1989. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Darrell was a strong and quiet man who loved his family, his many dogs, and his last dog, Lucky. He had a full-time caregiver for the last six years that took such good care of him, above and beyond expectations. You were a blessing, Cyndi Smith, thank you from all of us.

Darrell is survived by his three children, Vickie Fouts, of Coarsegold, California, Lester Scofield, of Groveland, and Raymond Scofield, of Queen Creek, Arizona; his five grandchildren, Preston and Natasha Fouts, Lester II, and Arnie and Sasha Scofield; and eight great-grandchildren.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Scofield, in 2016; his father, Ray Scofield; his mother, Martha Scofield; his brother, Chuck Scofieldand; and his sister, Winnie Ladyman.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Oak Grove Cemetery, 11300 Memorial Drive, Big Oak Flat, California 95305. Donations may be made to Sonora Vets Helping Vets, P.O. Box 25, Tuolumne, CA 95379.

Cremation is planned and Graveside services will be held.   Terzich & Wilson Cremation-Funeral Home entrusted with Cremation arrangements.
