Tuolumne County may be able to receive $4 Million in grants to establish a homeless program modeled after a San Francisco program created to address their homeless issue. The County has proposed the acquisition of the former Memory Care Center in Soulsbyville, where there are zero services like healthcare or law enforcement readily available, for conversion to a so-called “Navigation Center” for “transitional living.” The Supervisors held a one-day open house and an online survey, that’s it, and is now planning on a discussion and vote at tomorrow’s special meeting. We’re not sure that we should emulate anything that San Francisco does and this project, like the recent Columbia Inn near mistake, needs a lot more transparent discussion of the myriad of problems the county will face trying to manage the facility and, most important, how they are going to pay for it after the grant money runs out.
