Mother Lode Bonsai Club will offer a free public demonstration on a unique tree style by Paul Holtzen of El Dorado county. The presentation will follow the club member meeting on Saturday, October 5 at 10 a.m. Location is the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
Holtzen will adapt a weeping rosemary into a graceful literati (bunjin) tree. “The literati style is minimalistic in design with a thin, contorted trunk and sparse foliage,” he said. “These trees give the appearance of having survived through struggles in their natural environment. The primary appeal is in their simplicity, which inspires meditation and reflection.”
The Healdsberg native has been active in the living art of bonsai for over 40 years. He collects wild specimens (yamadori) of junipers, pines, oaks and redwoods, and then turns them into bonsai trees. Today, Holtzen’s collection of over 200 trees includes his favorites of Japanese maples and oaks.
Among Holtzen’s many internationally renown bonsai instructors are John Naka, Mas Imazumi, Peter Adams, Ryan Neil, Bjorn Bjorholm and Peter Tea. He is past president and member of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento and holds current memberships in the Sacramento Bonsai Club, Redwood Empire Bonsai Club, Bay Area Bonsai Associates, and Gold Country Bonsai Club.
There will also be a hands-on workshop, supervised by club mentors. Participants are encouraged to bring their tools, table covering and soil mix if available. Attendees can also take part in a raffle for materials and supplies, and a member bonsai tree sale.
Mother Lode Bonsai Club members come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as the central valley. For more information, contact Bev Meyerhoff at (916) 934-6916 or by email at bevmeyerhoff@sbcglobal.net.
