Mad Science Nights Spark Curiosity and Fun at Local Schools

Vallecito, CA– The Vallecito Union School District (VUSD) recently hosted two “Mad Science Nights,” drawing families together for evenings filled with hands-on science exploration. The first event at Albert Michelson Elementary on October 9 attracted 192 attendees, while a subsequent night at Hazel Fischer Elementary welcomed 148 participants eager to engage in various experiments.

VUSD Superintendent Tom Hoskins opened both events, highlighting their educational and community-building significance. Families received free Mentos and soda science experiment kits as they left, a popular takeaway from the evening. The events were funded by the Math Science and Computer Science (MSCS) Grant from the Calaveras County Office of Education, promoting family engagement and hands-on learning.

Activities included building marble runs, exploring owl pellets, and Lego coding, guided by volunteers from Bret Harte High School’s Forestry Club and science teacher Mr. Castro. Local food vendors provided dinner options, enhancing the community atmosphere.

“These events are a fantastic way to get students excited about science and learning,” Hoskins said. Feedback from families reflected their enjoyment, with one parent noting the inclusive nature of the activities. The success of Mad Science Nights has prompted VUSD to plan a Family Art Night for spring, further fostering engaging educational experiences.
