Bears Cruise To Victory

The Bears drove about 60 miles to Big Valley Christian School to play the Lions in a must-win game to have a chance to be co-champions of the Mother Lode League this year. They won the coin toss and deferred to the second half as they always like to start the game on defense, but the Lions surprised them with a beautiful 57-yard touchdown pass and took a seven-point lead. The Bears, however, responded quickly when Malakai Lopez ran the subsequent kickoff back for a 74-yard score. Each team scored again in the first quarter, ending at 14 all.

In the second quarter, the Bears took charge and rolled the score up to 37 to 14 at the half. Scoring was sparse in the second half as the Bears coasted to a 47-to-21 victory.
Scoring highlights for the Bears, other than the 74-yard kick return, included a 9-yard Isaac Biggs’ TD run, two touchdown shovel passes from Bryce Leveroos to Colton Cash covering 18- and 49-yards, a 40-yard scoop and score fumble recovery by Jonathan Whitney, and field goals of 40- and 35-yards by Bryson Benites.
The Hot Hit of the Night was made by Orlando Lopez when he drove a Lion to the turf, stopping a kick return. The Player of the Game was Jonathan Whitney for his fine defense play, including two fumble recoveries, one of which was a scoop and score.
The Bears are now 8 and 1 for the season and 4 and 1 in the MLL. They are home next week for the final game of the regular season against the Linden Lions.
