Commemoration of Armistice of World War I 100 Years Ago

This year’s Veterans Day/Armistice Day on Nov. 11 marks 100 years since the official end of World War I. To commemorate that event the Tuolumne County Historical Society (TCHS) is planning a World War I exhibit dedication on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. The free event is open to any interested members of the community. TCHS volunteers have arranged four different displays at the museum and one at the Tuolumne County Library about World War I and life in Tuolumne County during that period. The event will include a color guard from the Tuolumne County Veterans, speakers and refreshments. The displays cover the Spanish influenza, original World War I posters, a casualty list of local residents who died in the war, souvenirs brought home from the war, a memorial to George Marshall who is buried in France and a description by his mother, Hoveta Marshall, of her journey to France in 1933 as a Gold Star Mother. Copies of a new 28-page color edition of TCHS’s publication Chispa covering Tuolumne County during World War I will be available for purchase for $10. Current members will receive a free copy plus anyone joining the society by Dec. 31.
