Sonora, CA — Local officials have some advice regarding outdoor activities and fireworks.

Lakes and higher elevation destinations are expected to be popular today as triple digit heat is expected in the foothills.

Sgt. Chris Hewitt of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office says, “Practice personal safety, including staying hydrated, wearing life jackets when visiting our lakes and rivers, and maintaining common sense fire safety practices. One careless act with fireworks or other flammable devices could ignite a fire for which you could be legally responsible, both in criminal and civil courts.”

CAL Fire points out that fireworks, including those labeled “safe and sane”, are completely banned in Tuolumne County and areas covered by the Ebbetts Pass Fire District in Calaveras County. In addition, fireworks are banned on all federal lands in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties. This includes the Stanislaus National Forest and Bureau of Reclamation land.

Fines for violations start at $240 per person.

A special event will be held at the Bret Harte High School Sports Center Parking lot from 6-10 this evening where residents can bring and light off “safe and sane” fireworks. Officials with the Angels Camp Fire Department are planning to be on hand.
