Commission on Aging Activities

Welcome to the Tuolumne County Commission on Aging blog: it’s our ongoing effort that we hope will be the first of many aimed to bring information to help and inform seniors in our county.

The Tuolumne County Commission on Aging is comprised of no more than 20 members, and at present we have 18 commissioners from all over Tuolumne County.
We’ve had the privilege to be chaired by such quality and community-oriented people as Marge Depew, Cathie Peacock, Nick Cretan and in 2010-2011 by Ira Uslander.

The commissioners, with their extensive and varied experience and expertise, are all volunteers and without exception are primarily concerned with doing whatever they can to improve the lives of our county’s seniors in and around the Motherlode.

We meet to discuss such topics and issues of interest to seniors as:

  • Transportation
  • Access to county services
  • Isolation and/or being homebound
  • Medical problems such as, but not limited to, depression or lack of finances
  • Problems encountered when going back to school at a “senior” age
  • How to find “senior-friendly” services and contractors

And many more such topics.

Our next three GENERAL MEETING DATES: at Area 12 Agency on Aging, 19074 Standard Rd., Ste C, Standard CA, March 14; April 11, and May 9 at 1:30PM.
All our meetings are open to the public.

In past years, we presented in 2010 the first ever Senior Expo; gathered groups together for a “Senior Summit” at the 49’er Church in Columbia; hosted several Senior Volunteer of the Year awards and luncheon before the Board Of Supervisors; hosted a Funding Forum for Seniors at the Senior Center; and held two Centenarian Awards ceremonies.

Speaking of, the 2011 The Senior Expo will be held May 25, 2011 from 9am to 2pm at the MOTHERLODE FAIRGROUNDS, John Muir Building. Features and typical booths include:

  • Senior Idol contest! DO YOU SING OR DANCE?
  • Finance/Insurance
  • Medical such as blood draw (nominal fee);
  • Caregivers information / options
  • FOOD – will be available

In addition, various for-profit and non-profit groups will present their senior-oriented services and wares. Many booths are informational.
