Olive trees will be the topic at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, May 2 at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. Guest speaker Cesar Ordonez will present ideas on how to prepare them from start to finish to become miniature trees in a pot.

“We’ll talk about selecting specimens from an orchard or nursery and taking it from there to working on branching and design,” he said. “Olive trees are common in our region and easy to deal with.”

A resident of the Tulare area, Ordonez worked in agriculture before learning about bonsai. He has since become a professional bonsai consultant and teacher. While his clients are mainly in Fresno, he has given demonstrations at shows and conventions in Los Angeles, Sacramento and at the Golden State Bonsai Federation’s Rendezvous in Santa Nella. He grows and sells different varieties of trees, but olives are his favorite specimen for bonsai.

The club’s monthly meeting will start at 10 a.m. and will be followed by Ordonez’s presentation. There will also be a workshop and raffle for bonsai materials. Plus, members will have trees on sale for purchase.

There is no admission charge and the public is invited regardless of levels of knowledge on bonsai. For more info, contact Bev Meyerhoff at (916) 934-6916 or bevmeyerhoff@gmail.com. The club email is motherlodebonsaiclub@gmail.com.
