Central Sierra Audubon Society (CSAS) has planned an outing to Merced National Wildlife Refuge on Thursday, Jan. 21 to view wildlife that have stopped there along the Pacific Flyway on their annual migration south to warmer climates. Rather than carpooling to birding destinations, interested persons are asked to travel only with persons from their own household and observe social distancing. Field trip chairman Kit DeGear (925-822-5215 or kdegear@gmail.com) expects to view Snow/Ross’s Geese, Sandhill Cranes, many duck and shorebird species , raptors and possibly Great Horned Owls. Participants will meet at 2 p.m. at the parking lot observation platform on Sandy Mush Road off Highway 59 out of Merced. Persons participating in these group events are requested to take their temperature prior to arrival and bring masks, hand sanitizer, water and personal birding equipment.
