Doug Lau, who has raised bonsai trees for over 30 years, will share his favorite potting soil mix ideas with the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, March 1. The demonstration/ discussion is open to the public and will follow the club’s monthly meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. in the San Andreas Central Library meeting room, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road in San Andreas).
“Most bonsai hobbyists have their own personal ideas on different types of soil mixtures,” said Lau. “Each plant variety has its own unique mineral and nutrient requirements and as such, each person tries to formulate and use the right basic ingredients to encourage and stimulate overall growth.
“There are so many different schools of thought and approaches to this subject, some very traditional and others more contemporary. In any case, we will have an opportunity to hear and explore how others create their soil recipes too,” he said.
“While deciduous bonsai trees are hibernating right now in spring, it’s the ideal time of year to do repotting. This also applies to lots of container plants, so soil mixtures have a wide range of horticultural applications. Anyone with an interest in gardening could benefit from learning about this,” Lau added.
A raffle will be held for bonsai trees-in-training along with essential materials and supplies. Additionally, members will have finished trees available for purchase.
“Guests are welcome and encouraged to bring a tree to work on,” said Bev Meyerhoff, club president. “It doesn’t matter what level of experience you have with bonsai. Just come and enjoy this ancient living art and meet our members.”
