Gold-Digger Grannies Got Game!

Sunday April 28, 2024 at 2:00pm
At the Columbia Elementary School Gym, 22540 Parrotts Ferry Rd
Fundraiser for The Friends of Columbia State Historic Park
The Columbia Gold-Diggers will face off against the Sonora Poppies in a Granny Basketball® League Game. Immediately following this, “The Grannies” will challenge “The Greenies” of the Sierra Outdoor School Staff.

These educators of Sierra Outdoor School are generally much younger than the Grannies. The Greenies are also very physically fit, as they teach while leading over 20 hours worth of hikes in a typical school week. In order to even the playing field, the Grannies may provide hilarious handicaps for these young and fit Greenies. For example, when Cal Fire played basketball against the Grannies, they had to wear oven mitts on their hands, and their wrists were taped together.

Sierra Outdoor School “Greenies” will also discover distinct differences between the Granny rules and those of modern basketball: No running or jumping, only two dribbles before you have to pass or shoot, a court divided in thirds, whose lines you may not cross, the underhand “Granny Shot” is worth 3 points. And the obvious: loads of laughter. With more focus on camaraderie than competition, the Grannies evoke a community of caring.

Come and cheer, giggle along with the Grannies, and help us raise funds for The Friends of Columbia State Historic Park. (Donations will be accepted at the door.)

Meet the Amazing Barb Trammell, the Founder of Granny Basketball®, which now has nearly 600 players on 43 teams in 10 states in the USA and 1 team in Canada.
