Columbia College Hosts Inspiring Teaching and Learning Summit Featuring Erin Gruwell and Tony Becerra

Educators, students, and community members are invited to a transformative two-day event at Columbia College’s Dogwood Theatre on April 3 & 4, 2025. The Teaching and Learning Summit will feature renowned educator and author Erin Gruwell, along with Mauricio ‘Tony’ Becerra, one of the original Freedom Writers, as they share their experiences and insights on fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments.

This free event will begin on Thursday, April 3, at 5:00 PM with a special screening of the 2007 feature film Freedom Writers, which tells the powerful true story of Erin Gruwell and her students. A light dinner will be provided before the screening. Following the film, attendees will have the unique opportunity to participate in a behind-the-scenes Q&A session with Erin and Tony, followed by a book signing.

On Friday, April 4, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Erin and Tony will lead engaging sessions that inspire educators and community members to cultivate resilience and empowerment in the classroom. Their message of hope and perseverance highlights the importance of building inclusive educational spaces where all students can thrive. While sessions are designed for educators, everyone is welcome to attend.

Join us for this exceptional opportunity to learn from one of the most influential voices in education and gain valuable strategies to enhance student engagement and success.

While the event is free, registration is required, as space is limited. For more information, please contact Kirsten Miller at 209-588-2155 or millerk@yosemite.edu.
