2024 Mother Lode Orange Shirt Day Remembers Students of Indian Boarding Schools

Sonora Opera Hall doors open at 5PM on Monday 9/30 for the Mother Lode’s 3rd Orange Shirt Day memorial for children who were sent to Indian Boarding Schools from 1820 to 1980 in the U.S. and Canada–Over 200,000 . Ceremonies begin at 5:30 with a pre-colonial Indigenous Foods dinner at 5:40. The Mewuk Dancers and Women’s Healing Drum Circle offer two key traditions. Two guest speakers will tell about how today’s foster care system impacts Native children just as the boarding school system did for over 150 years. Native Elders will be honored, as well. The 2024 Orange Shirt Day is sponsored by Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Mewuk Indians and the Tuolumne Band of Mewuk Indians with additional support from Oak Valley Bank and Sonora Area Foundation. The 2024 Orange Shirt Day of the Mother Lode is working under the nonprofit umbrella of LoveTuolumneCounty.org
