The Columbia College Orchestra performs film scores from Jurassic Park, The Rocketeer and the Good, The Bad And The Ugly at their Spring concerts.

The performances will be held in the Dogwood Forum on the Columbia College campus on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Dr. Daniel Godsil, professor of music at Columbia College, conducts the orchestra.

Bringing movie music to the orchestra is an excellent way to connect with an audience, Godsil said.

“Film scores are the way most people hear orchestral music,” Godsil said. “It’s more accessible.”

The 1991 film The Rocketeer was based on a graphic novel by Dave Stevens. Local Sonora High School graduate Larry Franco served as Executive Producer for the film.

Connor Cowley will conduct his arrangement of The Ecstacy of Gold, a composition of Ennio Morricone for the movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Chance “Tone-y” Wood will conduct his arrangement of Kass’ Theme from the action-adventure video game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Marion Scott is conducting his original composition Dulce et Decorum which will be performed for the first time at the May concerts.

Concertmaster Paul Slemmons will perform Camille Saint-Saens’ Rondo Capriccioso and Sandra Betti will solo on Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino in D Major.

Godsil enjoys the blend of college aged students and retirees playing together in the orchestra.

“It’s a great musical tradition,” he said. “Everyone is learning and everyone is teaching.”
