Winter Weather Forecast For The Sierra Nevada

Sponsored by:

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada, from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. Additionally, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for Yosemite National Park, above the Valley floor, from 1 AM Saturday until 1 PM Sunday.

Heavy snow is forecast.

Snow accumulations will remain very high through Friday afternoon, then drop down to 5,000 to 6,000 feet late from Friday night into Saturday.

Accumulations are uncertain at this time, but may range from half-a-foot to four feet above the 6,000 foot elevation. The higher you go, the more the snow.

Winds could gust as high as forty to forty-five mph. Low visibility is likely, due to the combination of wind and heavy snow.

Dangerous travel conditions with chain controls and road closures are possible. Expect difficult travel with slick, snow covered roads. Slow down and use caution while traveling. Also, bring a winter survival kit if travel is necessary in the upper elevations.

The potential for mountain snow will likely continue into early next week.
