Water Quality Watched After Levee Break

Sponsored by:

The failure of a levee last week near Stockton is raising concerns that one of the state´s most important sources of water could be endangered.

Because the channels in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta provide a balance of fresh water with salty water from the San Francisco Bay, a break in the levee can upset that balance.

A state water official says he is — quote — “cautiously optimistic” about maintaining water quality after the break in the Jones Tract Levee.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol is urging drivers to avoid Highway Four in the area near Stockton.

The C-H-P says trucks will be using the highway to haul tons of rocks and dirt as workers try to fill a 500-foot section of the levee.
