Modesto Girl Drowns At Lake Don Pedro

Don Pedro, CA — A three-year-old girl from Modesto tragically drowned at the Fleming Meadows Lagoon at Lake Don Pedro.

It happened at around 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that she was first reported as missing, and as deputies were responding, she was located, and CPR was initiated by bystanders.

Members of the sheriff’s office boat patrol were in the area, and the deputies arrived and took over the life-saving efforts. Despite the quick response of bystanders, deputies, fire personnel, and medics, the child could not be revived and was pronounced deceased.

No additional information about the incident is being released at this time as it is still under investigation.

The sheriff’s office reports that the tragedy serves as an important reminder about water safety. Properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets are one of the most effective ways to prevent drowning, particularly for young children.  The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone enjoying our lakes and waterways to make water safety a priority by ensuring children wear a life jacket whenever they are in, on, or near the water.
