Sheppard Appointed New Sonora Mayor

Sponsored by:

In a special morning session, the Sonora City Council met to take care of some business, not the least of which was approving the results of March´s election, and the changing of the mayoral guard.

Newly appointed mayor David Sheppard accepted the gavel from Marlee Powell, who said she was a little bit reluctant to let it go.

“It´s been a very interesting and, I hope, productive couple of years. But I know you´ll do a good job,” said Powell.

“According to the word on the street, you´re supposed to hit me over the head with it,” joked Sheppard, evoking laughter from the entire room.

And with a new mayor, the city also got a new second-in-command. “As my firxt official act as new mayor I´d like to nominate Hank Russell to be Mayor Pro Tem,” Sheppard announced.

The nomination was approved unanimously by the council this morning.

And the council got to meet and recognize David Port… the 18-year-old volunteer firefighter who rescued Renny the Rat Terrier from a house fire in downtown Sonora last month.
