Get Your Piece Of “The Rock”
People fascinated with the history of Alcatraz Island can now own a piece of The Rock.
The National Park Service has started selling boxed chunks of concrete from the federal prison that once housed Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud.
The park service manages Alcatraz, and it´s renovating the old cell house and a guards´ quarters. It decided to sell rubble from the project in pieces as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to hauling it off the island.
Chunks of what´s known as “The Rock” are now retailing for $4.95 a piece at Alcatraz gift shops. Alcatraz is one of San Francisco´s most popular tourist attractions.
