Cates Trial Begins in Calaveras

Prosecutors say a Stockton man on trial in Calaveras County for murdering his girlfriend admitted to the crime.
The trial of Jay Edward Cates began on Wednesday. The prosecution told the jury that 42-year-old Cates admitted to his cousin that he strangled 41-year-old Keri Rasberry and hit her in the head with a wrench, which killed her. Prosecutors also say a large wrench found near Rasberry€™s body had the accused killer€™s palm print on it.
Rasberry€™s body was found near Calaveras Big Trees Park in October of 2001. Cates has been held for 18 months awaiting trial. The trial continues today.
