State officials say higher natural gas prices and a drop in hydroelectric production have led to a spike in the cost of wholesale electricity. Electricity prices on the spot market hit $140 per megawatt hour — nearly $50 more than the federal price cap that was lifted in October. On Monday, the price of natural gas surged 38 percent to its highest level in more than two years.
