SFO Getting Full Of Items

Sponsored by:

All those cigarette lighters, metal nail files and other items travelers must discard from their carryon luggage before boarding planes have really added up.

San Francisco International Airport says it has collected about two tons of such materials since September 11th. Airport spokesman Ron Wilson says there is no practical way to return the confiscated item to owners.

Instead, SFO has collected five-gallon buckets full of cigarette lighters, hair spray and common household items such as nail clippers. Wilson says it´s not the nail clippers that are the problem, it´s the metal file that comes with them.

The airport stores them in its sheet metal shop. A scavenger company soon will haul the items away.
