Burning In Big Trees State Park

Calaveras County, CA — Residents and commuters on Highway 4 could see smoke rising from Calaveras Big Trees State Park next week.

The Park’s Fall Prescribed Burning Program will be ignited this Monday, weather permitting. The park has sparked the program every year since 1976 to reduce harmful forest insects, clear fallen debris, and reduce the chances of forest fires.

The burn will include the North Grove of giant sequoias. In 2012, a four-year forest restoration program began in the grove. The Sierra Nevada Conservancy and other state programs have funded the grove’s thinning.
