Sonora, CA – It’s time to dust off those snowshoes as the Stanislaus National Forest (STF) is offering a great incentive to head outdoors.
Beginning this Saturday, and every Saturday throughout the winter, weather permitting, there will be free interpretive, snowshoe hikes in the forest. Grab your snowshoes and head to the Dodge Ridge courtyard where the hikes, led by Forest Service staff, will start at 10 a.m. Forest Service spokesperson Rebecca Garcia advises, “First off, be safe and dress appropriately for the weather. So, dress in layers, bring water and snacks because even though the hike is over mild terrain, you are going to want to make sure you have plenty of water.” Garcia adds that waterproof boots, pants, hat, and gloves are a good idea.
The hikes are typically two miles with several stops along the trail to enjoy nature. No experience is necessary to participate. If you do not have snowshoes, they can be rented at either Dodge Ridge or neighboring businesses, according to Garcia. Any questions regarding the hikes, contact Marie Malo, Natural Resources Interpretive Specialist at: 209-965-3434 x5343 or mgmalo@fs.fed.us.
