A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada, the lower Sierra Nevada of Mariposa County and Yosemite National Park from now until 4 AM Saturday. The National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Mother Lode, starting at 10 AM this morning (Wednesday) and continuing until 4 AM Saturday.
The snow levels will continue to range between 1,000 to 2,000 feet today through Friday. Snow showers will develop today after a brief break this morning. The heaviest snow is expected from this evening through Friday afternoon.
The total snow accumulations from 1,000 to 1,500 feet will range between two to ten inches. One to seven feet of total snow accumulation is expected above 1,500 feet. The higher you go, the more the snow.
Winds could gust as high as forty mph below 3,000 feet, and as high as fifty to seventy mph above 3,000 feet. The gusty winds and heavy snow could cause low visibility and extensive tree damage. Downed trees and tree limbs and local power outages are possible. The cold wind chills, as low as thirty below zero, could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible at times this week. The hazardous conditions will probably impact the morning and evening commutes. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
