Down To The Wire Loss For Summerville

The Summerville Bears made the forty-mile drive to Calaveras High School last night with the intention of improving their season record to 6 and 0. They were able to stop the Redhawks on their first drive. Then on their first play, a 75-yard sweep around left end, Colton Cash appeared to score the first Bear touchdown of the evening. Unfortunately, there were two yellow flags on the turf, and the offsetting penalties took the points off the scoreboard. This set the stage for a penalty and mistake-filled first half, and the Bears left the field down 19 to 0. But there was no quit in the Bears as they battled back in the second half, scoring five touchdowns while giving up two to the Redhawks. The final extra-point try started with a bouncing snap, and the holder got it down late. The attempt was blocked, and the Bears lost the heartbreaker 35 to 34.

The scores for the Bears included three short TD runs by Bryce Leveroos, a 75-yard end run by Cash, and a halfback pass from Orlando Lopez back to Leveroos. Also contributing to quick scores were two nice kickoffs by Bryson Benitas: one an 11-yard onside bouncer and the other a pooch of 30 yards, both recovered by the Bears.

The Hot Hit of the Game was made by Kyle Hamilton on a crushing tackle with just three minutes left in the game. The Player of the Game was Colton Cash, who carried the ball just seven times but went for 124 yards and a TD and never stopped playing his heart out.

The Bears are now 5 and 1 for the season and 2 and 1 in Mother Lode League play. Next week they will host the River Islands Riptide, an actual new school in the Mother Lode League.
