Summerville Gets Another W

Last night the Summerville Bears played a non-league game against the Hilmar Yellowjackets. Coming into the game, the Bears were ranked number 1 in division Vll of the SJS, while the Yellowjackets were ranked number 5 in division V. This division V ranking is because Hilmar has at least three times the number of students in its student body than Summerville, so the Bears were sure this would be a tough game, and they were correct. Hilmer started their first drive on the 20-yard line and took only five plays to drive 80 yards to the endzone and go ahead 7 to 0. Then the Bears shook off the surprise of the quick touchdown and controlled the rest of the half, scoring twice to go into the locker room up 14 to 7. The second half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams scoring twice, and the Bears walked off the field with a proud 28-to-19 victory.

The Bears’ first touchdown in the first quarter was a 3-yard run by Bryce Leveroos at the end of a 76-yard all-run drive. Their second score, in the second quarter, was on a 1-yard run, again by Leveroos, at the end of a 90-yard drive that contained only one completed pass of 3 yards. These two drives ate up about 15 of the first 24 minutes of the game.

The Bears’ third-quarter touchdown was ignited by a 59-yard kick return by Orlando Lopez to set them up for a short drive. Colton Cash scored the TD with a 14-yard dash around the left end. Their fourth-quarter score was a 19-yard end run, again by Cash, to finish the third long drive of the night. Hilmar matched the Bears’ two touchdowns in the half with two nice runs, one for 78 yards and the other for 17 yards. Extra points played a major part in the game as Bryson Benites kicked all four for Summerville while the Bears blocked one of the Himar attempts and stopped a 2-point try.

The Bears had a great rushing night with 377 yards on 65 carries. Leveroos gained 185 yards on 28 carries with his two touchdowns. Owen Biggs had a 140-yard night on just 20 carries, and Cash carried the rock just six times but gained 41 yards and had two touchdowns.

Owen Herrera had the Hot Hit of the Game with a hard tackle of a Hilmar kick returner inside the 20-yard line, and Bryce Leveroos was the Player of the Game for his 185 yards on 28 carries and his leadership throughout the game.

The Bears are now 7 and 1 on the season and still 3 and 1 in Mother Lode League play. Next week they will travel to Modesto to clash with the Big Valley Christian Lions.
