Creepy Emails Received Locally Are Part Of A Scam Reported Nationwide

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Multiple people in the Mother Lode have reached out to Clarke Broadcasting about receiving emails in recent days in which a scammer actually lists the victim’s name, phone number, and home address.

In some instances, even a photo of the road they live on is included.

The scammer writes, “I suggest you read this message carefully. Take a moment to chill, breathe, and analyze it thoroughly. We’re talking about something serious here, and I don’t play games.”

The letters go on to state the victims have clicked on a pornography website and the scammer has accessed their camera, contacts, and personal information. In order to not release the video and screenshots, the scammer demands a “privacy fee” be paid in Bitcoin.

At the end of the letter, it states that the victim has one day to make a decision.

This same scam has been reported in other communities across the country.

We reached out to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, and Sgt. Nate Yorston says that they have received reports from people over the past couple of years receiving this same email, or something very similar. It is likely making the rounds again, locally, trying to scam people into sending money.

The sheriff’s office notes that there are different scams happening across the country daily. It is important to always remain vigilant against scammers.

The Federal Trade Commission has a section on its website dealing with what to do if you believe you are the victim of a scam. Click here for more information.
