Boater Rescues Fawn From Stalking Coyote

Sponsored by:

Calaveras County, CA—A couple fishing New Melones on the Calaveras County side recounts a harrowing story about a fawn’s fight for survival and how they rescued it from a chasing coyote.

Hearing the frantic calls of a fawn to its mother, the couple looked to the shore and saw it suddenly shooting out of the brush with a coyote hot on its heels. Fearing for its life, the fawn ran into the water and began swimming in circles as the coyote stalked it from the shore.

The boaters watching this scene unfolded fearing the fawn would become exhausted, so the man, only identified as Timmy, put the trolling motor into high gear and headed toward the fawn. He scooped up the little guy and brought him into the boat while the fawn wailed for its mother.

Timmy says all the commotion finally got its mom’s attention, and she came running for a few hundred yards down the shoreline, seeing her baby in the water and the coyote on shore licking its chops. She raced to the predator and began kicking and trying to stomp it with her hooves. Luckily, the coyote had enough, and it ran over a hill.

The mother then came back to the water’s edge, looking for her fawn. Timmy headed closer to the shore and, about ten feet away, put the fawn back in the water. It swam quickly back to its mother, and she checked to make sure her baby was okay. While the fawn nursed a few seconds, Timmy says, “She gave me a look of thanks, and they headed back into the brush. I hope the little fawn is still alive and healthy today.”

Timmy had his girlfriend snap the picture in the image box to show this was no tall tale.
