Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Bust
Sonora, CA — A routine traffic stop leads to a drug bust and scuffle with police in Sonora. It happened yesterday just before 1:30 on the 100 block of Columbia Way. Officers stopped a 96 Toyota Camry for having a brake light out. While questioning the driver, Rick Burgess, 24 of Sonora, the officer noticed he had symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance.
Burgess was arrested and handcuffed. A search of Burgess netted some methamphetamine which officers put on the trunk of his car. Officers say when they started to walk Burgess to their patrol car, he tried to jump on the trunk and grab the meth. When that didn’t work, they say he tried to run, but was caught.
Burgess is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. He is also charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and obstructing an Officer, all misdemeanors.
