Hwy 108 Fire Safe Council Set For Thursday Meeting

Sonora, CA — The Hwy 108 Fire Safe Council will be conducting a meeting tomorrow evening for Twain Harte area residents to discuss fire protection, emergency preparedness and fire prevention measures needed to protect life, property and resources from wildland fires.

The public meeting is scheduled for 6pm at the Twain Harte Community Center-American Legion Post 681 at 18755 Manzanita Rd.

The subject area includes public and private land accessed by Middle Camp, North Tuolumne, Twain Harte Drive, Joaquin Gully Roads and Hwy 108.

The meeting will feature two presentations. The first program will outline a 20 year historical perspective on wildland fire within Tuolumne, Calaveras and Mariposa Counties including the 147,000 acre Stanislaus Complex Fire of 1987. 7,000 Mother Lode residents were evacuated while 5,000 firefighters were utilized to control the three week fire according to Stanislaus National Forest Spokesman Pat Kaunert.

The second program will focus on the important role fire plays in reducing flammable fuels and maintaining the ecological balance of landscapes within Yosemite National Park.
