Marianne “Bambi” Gittings, born September 20, 1940 in Oakland, CA. Her father went to war so Bambi (age 2), her mom and her sister moved into her grandparents’ house in Berkeley. She graduated from Berkeley High in 1959. That same year her father died at 39 and she got married. She tutored nursing school in S.F. but quit two years later to join the husband in the army in Texas. Her life led her to San Luis Obispo, Napa and finally Sonora in 1971. Bambi was a homemaker for her two children and husband of 61 years. She went back to school and earned her LVN. As an avid quilter, she turned out more than 50 works of art. She donated them to family, friends, and charities. She also knitted, quilled, needle-pointed, cross stiched and more. Over the years in Sonora she worked at Mallards Flower Shop, Red Church Thrift Store, and the Community Thrift Store. She volunteered at school activities and programs like PTA and scouts. Camping and gardening were a few of her free time activities. In 1985 when her husband had a teaching exchange from Sonora High she spent a year in Fairbanks Alaska. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005. She passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020 at her residence in Sonora, California due to complications of Parkinson’s.
