In his July 2021 essay, “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians,” Vladimir Putin claimed that the “true sovereignty of Ukraine is possible only in partnership with Russia,” and went on to suggest Lithuania, Moldova, Belarus, and parts of Poland and Slovakia were once integral parts of Russia. This is his warning that he wants to grab more territory, and several of his targets are NATO allies, which the U.S. has pledged by treaty to aid with our armed forces if they’re attacked.
