A wealth of financial information awaits at the Senior Family Forum
In his 1975 book Without Feathers Woody Allen humorously observed, “Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.”
Unfortunately, money isn’t a laughing matter to most people. Instead, the American Psychological Association’s 2017 Stress in America survey shows that about 62 percent of Americans feel stressed about money.
Adding to the stress are sobering headlines blaring threats to our pocketbooks: “More California Homeowners Struggle to Get Fire Insurance”, “Social Security has a looming $11 trillion shortfall”, “FBI says Internet romance scams on the rise…”
Sonora Area Foundation’s upcoming Senior Family Forum – Money Matters event offers an opportunity to help mitigate that stress through education. The event brings local experts’ financial knowledge to seniors and their families, and the only cost to attendees is a few hours of their time.
The free event, to be held Thursday, October 4 from 8:45 a.m. to noon at Sierra Bible Church, is SAF’s third forum. The first, presented in May 2017, was the brainchild of SAF board member Gary Dambacher and included both legal and financial information. This year, the legal and financial sides were split into two events, with legal issues the focus of the May 2018 forum.
No products or services are sold at the forums; the event is provided as a community service. The forum’s goal is to educate seniors and their families on timely, important financial issues.
Money Matters’ roster includes seven local professionals speaking on a broad range of topics: Funeral and burial expenses (Jeff Wilson); long-term care insurance (Michelle Dean); Social Security (Ron Roberson, CPA); scams (Sheriff Bill Pooley); fire insurance update (Julie von Savoye); new tax law and charitable giving (E. Samuel Wheeler, CPA); reverse mortgages (Stan Forrest); and more.
Weighty topics all, to be sure, but the condensed nature of the presentations translates to succinct, accessible material. Consider what past forums’ attendees had to say:
