Experience the magic, mystery and fun of Columbia State Historic Park this holiday season with its 39th annual Lamplight Tour!

On December 6th and 7th, 2024, the streets of Columbia will come alive with history as lantern-carrying guides lead you through an evening of drama, humor, and rich storytelling in “The Richest Man in Town, or The Misadventures of a Munificent Major.”

Don’t miss your chance to see this unforgettable walking play, set in Columbia’s historic gold rush era.

Friday, December 6: Tours start at 6:30 pm., with six tours departing every 15 minutes.
Saturday, December 7: Tours start at 5:50 pm., with nine tours departing every 15 minutes.
On both evenings, tours will begin at the Columbia State Historic Park Museum, and leave every 15 minutes. Guests will be led to some rarely visited, yet historically significant buildings within the park.

What to Expect: This year’s play follows the heartwarming and humorous journey of Major Alva Farnsworth, a founding citizen of Columbia, businessman and former philanthropist, as he makes his way through the town of Columbia seeking the support of the local townsfolk to make Christmas a reality for his struggling family. Join Major Farnsworth as he seeks to rekindle the town’s Christmas spirit, calling upon local townsfolk, miners, performers, and business owners to help him and his family during their time of need. Along the way, you’ll be treated to both lighthearted folly and thought-provoking moments of generosity, community, and love.

After the tour, guests are invited to gather at Angelos Hall to enjoy lively 1855-era music, dancing, and refreshments, bringing the evening to a festive close.

Tickets are available online at Friends of Columbia State Historic Park or contact us at (209) 248-6707.
Cost: $25 per person. Children under 8 are free!

Spaces are limited, and this event regularly sells out, so be sure to book your tickets early for this captivating and immersive evening—where history, humor, and holiday spirit come together in the lamplight of Columbia.

A Unique, Historical Experience: Columbia’s Lamplight Tour is not only a delightful way to celebrate the holiday season, but also a rare opportunity to explore some of the park’s most exclusive and hidden locations. As you stroll through the streets, lit only by the soft glow of lantern light, you’ll be transported back in time to experience the charm and complexity of Columbia’s early days.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Columbia State Historic Park, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID #77-0368895). Our mission is to support the preservation and interpretive activities of Columbia State Historic Park, ensuring future generations can continue to experience and learn from its remarkable past by the preservation and educational promotion of the park’s rich history.
