Aronos Club Hosts Jane Austen Tea

The Aronos Research Club invites everyone to come to a Spring Tea with a Jane Austen theme on Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Aronos Clubhouse located at 37 Elkin Street in downtown Sonora.

Tickets are $25 per person and will be sold at the door. Information regarding the tea is available by calling Cathie Hollins at (559) 301-4635 or emailing aronosresearchclub@yahoo.com.

Cathie Hollins said the Aronos Research Club teas, held in spring and fall of each year, have long been a popular event.

“In addition to tea and scrumptious goodies, we will have live entertainment,” Hollins said.

English Country Dances will be performed by live musicians. Entertainment includes local tap dancer Bonnett Saussol with performances by her and her dancers, which has been a popular tradition at the teas. Games and prizes are included in the mix.

Education has been an emphasis of the Aronos Research Club since its founding 109 years ago. Funds raised during the Jane Austen themed Spring Tea will go toward the club’s Scholarship Program. The Aronos Research Club has offered scholarships to Columbia College students since the campus was open.

The Aronos Research Club was established in 1915 and purchased the clubhouse in 1936. The members provide a variety of community services including providing a monthly speakers series at the clubhouse, creating homemade Valentine’s Day Cards for homebound residents, and hosting Coffee With A Cop. Membership is open to men and women and is affiliated with the California Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

“Ours is one of the few clubs in California that own their own clubhouse,” Hollins said.

The Aronos Clubhouse, first built in 1902 as a church, is available for rent. Enquiries can be made to Shelly Stewart at (209) 770-1144 or by emailing aronosresearchclub@yahoo.com.
