Bret Harte Theater Presents The Addams Family: School Edition
Students at Bret Harte Union High School will present the musical comedy The Addams Family: School Edition this November at the Dr. Elliott A. Smart Performing Arts Center. The show brings the delightfully eccentric Addams family to life as Wednesday Addams, the darkest teen you’ll ever meet, falls in love with a sweet young man from a Midwestern family—a secret that turns the household upside down when they host a dinner for the “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
Five performances will take place over two weeks, beginning with shows on Thursday November 5 and Friday November 6 at 7pm. A 2pm matinee will show on Saturday November 7, followed by additional 7pm performances on Thursday November 12 and Friday November 13.
This year marks a notable shift in BH Theater’s calendar, with the musical being staged in the fall (rather than spring, when it’s historically been produced.) A variety of factors went into the decision, but the show’s proximity to Halloween has the cast and crew excited about the change.
Following recent Bret Harte musicals The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Chicago, Bret Harte theatricians return to the stage with a musical featuring a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The student cast is directed by Grover Anderson, features a live student and community orchestra conducted by Bret Harte music director David Allured, and was choreographed by Sophie Smylie. BH Technical Theater Director Dave Duggan and the BH Technical Theater class built the sets, with design and artistic support from Dahlia Guillon and Gweneth Heinle.
Cast and Crew Include: Abby Schram, Abby Solo, Addie Redford, Alex Kimber, Anna Croyle, August Scott, Ayden Iannarelli, Charlie Hostetter, Ellie Freer, Elliot Hungerford, Eloise Dodge, Gia Rinauro, Gwen Heinle, Juliana Cargile, Khloe Losik, Koda Ponder, Levi Lucore, Mae Nith, Sarah Cuslidge, and Wyatt Pitto. Samuel Baker is the stage manager.
The Addams Family: School Edition is acceptable for most audiences; some more mature jokes may go over the heads of younger viewers. Bret Harte previously staged The Addams Family in 2018, a production Anderson cites as one of his favorites.
