This debate is unlike those produced for TV, or debate teams in high school or college. It is designed to bring together speakers on both sides of an issue, within a format that allows everyone to speak or ask questions, while encouraging respectful dialog, civility in disagreement, and a collective search for truth.
The debate follows a format developed by Braver Angels, a national organization dedicated to depolarization, and will be moderated by a trained Debate Chair. In this format, speeches of 3-4 minutes are made alternating for and against the resolution/question. Following each speech, the Chair takes questions for the speaker from the audience. Speeches may be prepared in advance or delivered in the moment and everyone is encouraged to speak.
Speakers can make their case from a variety of perspectives. They may draw on personal experience, academic research, news reports or anything else that they want the audience to know. Our goal is to share the widest range of opinions that exist within our community.
