Calaveras County Airport Fly-In & Open House
On Saturday April 27th Calaveras Airport and the Mother Lode Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter 484 will be hosting our annual open house and Fly-In. For more than 20 years now this event is popular with our local community and for many California pilots who fly in just to relax, eat, and enjoy their day here in the scenic Mother Lode.
We will have classic cars on display along with the Mountain RC club’s static display of their radio controlled airplanes. Antique, classic, and experimental aircraft will fly in to participate in our airport day event.
We start the day with a pancake breakfast offered by Tri-Dam Lions Club. Our EAA chapter 484 will host a BBQ lunch and the Murphy’s Boy Scout Troop 473 will be serving up hot dogs.
Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day starting with “The Calaveras Community Band” followed by “The Rusty Rockers”.
We are expecting Cal Fire and the Highway Patrol to set up information booths. Cal Fire will have a fire truck display. CHP is planning to fly in a helicopter to put on display along with one of their patrol cars.
Very popular are the scenic airplane rides offered throughout the day starting around 8:30am. Our local pilots donate their time, fuel, and airplanes for the wonderful experience of viewing the Mother Lode from the air. Tickets sell out early and the line gets long so come out for breakfast and enjoy an early morning flight!
A nominal donation for the airplane rides of $10 for children and $20 for adults goes to our EAA chapter 484 for their scholarship fund. These funds are given to aspiring youths in our Young Eagles Program that desire to pursue an aviation career. The national EAA organization has flown over 2 million kids between the ages of 8-17. Our EAA chapter 484 hosts a Young Eagle Flight event each month between May and October.
