a film screening and community dialogue that is a follow-on to the hate crimes forum that took place at Columbia College in May. The purpose is to bring together people from across the community to engage with the themes of compassion and creating understanding across differences that the film presents. The event is timed to coincide with United Against Hate Week, a nationwide initiative in which communities host events to raise awareness and conversation about the issue of hate in our communities.
It’s an incredible film. Filmmaker Deeyah Khan, a Muslim Pakistani woman who grew up in Europe, sought to meet and understand the white nationalists who sent her vicious hate mail after an interview went viral in which she discussed immigration in Europe. Her curious, respectful, yet insistent questioning leads them to honestly share their belief systems and the experiences that led them there while also causing them to question themselves as they try to align their views with their view of her, whom they come to consider a friend.
The plan is to show the one-hour film and then host dialogue circles to give people a chance to engage on the themes in the film before coming back together to wrap up the event. Coffee, tea and popcorn will be provided.
