Join the Tuolumne County Historical Society as we celebrate the 117th Birthday of American humorist and Tuolumne native Lord Buckley as “Lord Buckley Takes a Whack at the Classics,” on Wednesday April 12 at 3PM at the County Mail Library meeting room. Local radio host David Simerley will discuss Buckley’s work and give examples of some of Buckleys most famous routines. There will be a display of Buckleys memorabilia that Simerley has collected over the years.
Richard Myrle Buckley , born April 5, 1906, was the youngest of 10 children. Marie Rozier, a longtime Tuolumne teacher and historian, went to school with Buckley. She said he enjoyed playing the ukulele, was talking constantly, and entertained everyone with his stories. In 1925, at the age of 19, Buickley left Tuolumne to meet his brother for a job in the oil fields, but ended up joining the vaudeville circuit instead.
He didn’t tell jokes but was considered the founding father of modern comedy, also described as the original hipster, beatnik, first flower child, and rapper. Come and celebrate the life of the “King of Cats!” and learn about a famous Tuolumne County Son.
