The Tuolumne County Breastfeeding Coalition (TCBC) is celebrating World Breastfeeding Week
August 1st – 7th with local events, and will continue to raise awareness about the importance of
breastfeeding throughout the month and beyond. Breastfeeding is an important tool to help promote
children’s health, and over time can also help reduce women’s risk of chronic diseases such as breast
cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes. But breastfeeding takes time and commitment to succeed,
and mothers deserve support. Husbands, partners, grandparents, friends and employers are all
important in creating a supportive community that can help a mother reach her breastfeeding goals,
whatever those goals may be. That’s why the theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2021 is
Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.

TCBC invites our entire community to join in celebrating this important stage of life with a
Breastfeeding Awareness Walk on Wednesday, August 11th, 10:00AM at Columbia College, held in
partnership with the Tuolumne County WIC Program and La Leche League of Tuolumne County. Join
breastfeeding families and advocates for an outdoor walk around the beautiful Columbia College pond
(meet under the Manzanita archway in front of the bookstore). Refreshments, prize drawings and
information booths will follow the walk.

Also, on Saturday, August 7th, TCBC will present the Sonora Applebee’s with the 2021 Breastfeeding
Friendly Workplace Award for their support of breastfeeding employees. Applebee’s has created a
workplace culture where mothers are able to take the time they need to nurse their babies during work
hours, with support from both management and supportive co-workers who are willing to cover for
each other. TCBC commends Applebee’s staff and management for investing in their employees who are
striving to balance work and breastfeeding.

During World Breastfeeding Week, TCBC will also give a basket of mother- and baby-care items to the
first breastfed baby born in the county during the week, as well as provide breastfeeding support
information to area medical providers and celebrate breastfeeding on Facebook and Instagram:
@tuolumnecountybreastfeeding, and #tuolumnebreastfeeding.
