How can I help make my child more comfortable in the hospital?
If you can, try to maintain some normal routines. Play games or read familiar stories. Bring your child’s favorite toy, blanket or pillow. Realize that stubbornness is normal when a child is in a scary situation and that your child will be more comfortable if you are calm and comfortable. It is important to have a good relationship with a local pediatrician who you trust so that you can be confident should your child ever face a medical problem.
The hospital environment can also provide wonderful teachable moments, giving children an opportunity to learn about various health care occupations, health conditions, medical equipment, etc. The experience could even spark an interest in your child to eventually pursue a medical career, just as it did for me.
