How is back pain diagnosed?

Back pain is diagnosed with a careful history and physical exam which includes a review of treatments that have been tried and the patient’s responses to those treatments. Radiographic studies, including MRI, CT and X-ray are often used and sometimes electrodiagnostic studies are used to evaluate the nerves and muscles.
