Highway 108 Sonora Pass Reopens Thursday

Tuolumne County, CA – Sonora Pass Highway 108 will reopen tomorrow morning, as Caltrans praised the Long Barn road crews for clearing the pass so quickly.

With the spring season clearing of snow, ice, down trees, and debris complete, Sonora Pass (9,624 feet elevation), the second-highest point on the state highway system maintained by Caltrans, will open at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Caltrans praised the District 10 Long Barn maintenance crew for making great progress in clearing Sonora Pass this season, as they exceeded the annual goal of reopening the highway before Memorial Day.

The highway closed for the winter season on December 26, 2025, at the Sno-Park, approximately 28 miles to the summit, just north of Strawberry. In late March, as reported here, Caltrans reopened a section of the pass eastbound to Eagle Meadows, and two weeks later, the eastbound Kennedy Meadows gate was opened on April 9, 2026.

“We are pleased to reopen the highway for the season without incident and to allow early public access for recreation activities along Sonora Pass,” stated Caltrans.

Motorists are urged to use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain passes and to watch for icy roads, especially in the overnight and early morning hours.

Caltrans District 10 also oversees Highway 4, Ebbetts Pass, which remains closed to eastbound traffic at Lake Alpine. Plow crews continue to clear snow and debris, but no update has been provided on the progress or when the highway will reopen. Caltrans usually aims to get these passes open by Memorial Day weekend.

Tioga Pass Highway 120, operated by Yosemite National Park, is still closed within the park from Tuolumne Grove, just east of Crane Flat, to the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. Park officials report that spring clearing began on April 15, but no date has been announced for the roadways’ reopening.
