Barbara Applebee

January 22, 1941 – November 3, 2025

Barbara Ann Bauer Applebee, 84, of Jamestown (Quartz), California, passed away on November 3, 2025, after many years of gracefully managing multiple health issues. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Barbara moved as a young child to San Francisco, where her father found work in the WWII shipyards and later for Hiram Walker. He worked hard to put all seven of his children through parochial schools.

The second of seven children, Barbara enjoyed a carefree childhood during San Francisco’s heyday. After high school, she worked for Bank of America before marrying the love of her life, Timothy Brooks Applebee, and becoming a housewife and mother.

Not outdoorsy herself, she honeymooned in Sonora during a sweltering July and hiked the Grand Canyon with her adventurous new husband, Tim. She endured many camping trips and nature hikes over the ensuing years with her family of five children. As her children grew older, Barbara started working for Tuolumne County Social Services. After her children were grown, she and Tim continued traveling from their beloved home base in Tuolumne County, visiting Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, England, Paris, and Alaska by ship.

Barbara would go to any lengths to support friends and family, and was a second mother to many, especially in her later years. Barbara never met a stranger and had an open and kind heart. She was part of many different charitable organizations over the years. She worked for the Salvation Army, including sitting on the local board, to help her community members; she served on the Jamestown Elementary School board—long after her last child had graduated, and volunteered in classrooms at local schools.

Barbara, a devoted and supportive mother, was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, Timothy Applebee, and is survived by her daughters Jane Applebee, Donna Hansen, and Diane Applebee; sons Tim (Alma) and Daniel (Michele Cowden) Applebee; grandchildren Forrest (Amy), Bianca (Brian), Peter, Madeline (Kameron), Gabriela, and Isabelle. Barbara is also survived by her sisters and brothers: Mary Milani, Terry Bauer, Monica Emrick (Jim), Mark Bauer (Pan), David Malloy (Linda), and her aunt Rosemary Maguire. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mary Maguire Bauer and Donald Paul Bauer, brothers Donald Jr. (Carole) and Stephen Bauer (Tanya), and brother-in-law Wayne Milani.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Snowline Hospice of El Dorado County or Hospice of the Sierras of Tuolumne County would be deeply appreciated. A celebration of life will be planned early in the new year.
